A Slow Stitching Retreat in Bad Gastein
This autumn we’ll gather in the Austrian Alps to create an improvised patchwork, using naturally dyed and remnant materials and hand-sewing techniques to bring fragments together into something new.
We'll explore composition and colour, and enjoy the quiet rhythm of stitching by hand, inspired by the serene vistas overlooking the historic village of Bad Gastein. Dörte will bring a selection of naturally dyed fabrics - participants are welcome to bring additional materials. The created piece can be used as a wall hanging or extended into a greater textile object (i.e. curtain, pillow, bag, table cloth).
Between creative sessions, we share meals and enjoy the surroundings - a swim in the iconic hotel pool, relaxing hours in the sauna or sun terrasse, yoga, or quiet walks through the autumn forest.

Location + Arrival
the cōmodo
Housed on the grounds of the historic Habsburger Hof, originally built in 1881, destroyed and re-erected in 1962, The Cōmodo was reimagined in 2023 by Berlin architect Barbara Elwardt. The hotel blends mid-century warmth with alpine calm - a place where art, craft and nature quietly meet, high above the Austrian Alps.
Getting there: By car, there is ample parking available on the grounds. By train, travel to Bad Gastein station, from where a pick-up by car can be arranged. (You can indicate your preference in the registration form.)

Accommodation
Each of the 70 rooms blends mid-century warmth with modern comfort: oak parquet with floor heating and original vintage furniture.
Bold shapes and rich shades of wine and bottle-green sit against terrazzo floors, oak and pine — a playful nod to 1960s and 70s modernism. Many rooms open onto views of the Gastein valley or the surrounding pine forest.

FAQ’s
Can I bring a project I have already started to the workshop?
You absolutely can. Just be mindful that this is a hand-stitching retreat, there will be no space for very large projects. The idea is to gather in a group and enjoy each other’s company while creating.
1
Do I have to join all workshops?
Everything is optional, there is no must. You are free to join the workshops at your pace, and if you prefer to keep stitching into the late evening with a glass of wine that’s also OK. We will make sure to provide the space!
2
I want to come with my friend/ family that are not taking part in the retreat. Can I still share a room with them?
